Haematology is the study of the bodies blood
cells. Different conditions produce different types of changes with both the white and red
cells in the blood.
The red cells are those responsible for
carrying oxygen.
The white cells are responsible for
dealing with infection, making antibodies, involved in allergic reactions
and removing foreign material from the body.

of a Complete Blood Count
| Neutrophils increase in number with most infections |
 |
Eosinophils are seen with allergic reactions and parasites |
 |
| Band cells are immature neutrophils indicating an infection has
been going for a while |
 |
Monocytes help remove foreign debris and bacteria |
 |
| Lymphocytes are involved with producing antibodies which then fight
infection |
 |
Leukaemia. Large numbers of abnormal monocytes indicated a serious
cancer of the blood |
 |
| Haemobartonella. A parasite of cats that destroys the red blood
cells shows up as a dark inclusion in the red blood cells |
 |
Auto immune haemolytic anaemia is caused by the bodies own immune
system destroying red blood cells. Click on picture to learn more. |
