Boarding Kennels and Catteries

For a variety of reasons planning for an upcoming holiday may need to include accommodation arrangements for your dog and/or cat. In some instances it may be possible for your pets to stay at home. This can be best achieved by arranging for a friend or relative to live in during the period you are away although there are also commercial organisations who will arrange the service for you.

More commonly a dog is boarded at a boarding kennels. Many dogs spend very happy holidays in kennels and look forward to going. Plan the visit well ahead, just as you do with your own holiday and make sure you visit the kennels beforehand to satisfy yourself that the accommodation is up to your expectations. All commercial boarding kennels today have to be licensed by the local authority but standards do vary and it is worthwhile obtaining recommendations from friends, neighbours or the staff at Karingal Veterinary Hospital.

Another good tip is to board your pet for a weekend or a few days and see how he/she settles in.

Remember that your dog’s and cat’s vaccinations should be up-to-date since it is the hallmark of a good kennels/cattery to insist upon full vaccination with a certificate to prove it before they will admit your animal. If they do not wish to see this, you have probably chosen the wrong kennels/cattery. You should check exactly what vaccinations your pet has had and make sure they comply with the kennels’ or catteries’ requirements. The list below has what vaccination status is required for each establishment. If you are unsure exactly what vaccinations your pet has had then you should contact us AT LEAST 4 WEEKS before putting your pet into the kennel or cattery. At Karingal Veterinary Hospital we recommend dogs be vaccinated with C5 and cats with F3 if they are going into kennels or a cattery.

Vaccinations for dogs fall into three categories:

    1. C3

    1. C4

    1. C5

All cats are vaccinated with a vaccine called F3. This provides protection against feline enteritis and feline respiratory syndrome (or as it is more commonly called, cat ‘flu).

If you are at all unsure of the vaccination status of your pet or if you are unsure if your pet has had its full course of vaccinations then PLEASE contact us well before your pet is being taken to the kennels or cattery.

The following list of Kennels and Catteries is by no means inclusive of all the facilities in our area. Nor does listing here mean that we are endorsing any of the following business. For specific recommendations feel free to talk to our staff. One should always try and inspect a kennel or cattery prior so you feel totally comfortable about leaving them there.
